HOUSE OF GOD

houseMy dear Faith, attired in pink night clothes, laid sleeping as I kissed her and lit a candle to go check on the House of God. As I turned the rusty doorknob, rusted of course by those hands dripping wet from the baptisms they had received, a breeze blew out the last little flicker of my light. Yet, the moon gave slightly enough illumination as to allow a small glimpse into the House.

Stumbling in the dark, I heard laughter turn into a smoker’s wheezy cough as a group of overseers sat in the back pew telling off color jokes. Near the front the moon reflected the faces of some young girls who had been with child but yet they sat childless. Then I heard a familiar voice. It was my old friend. Thank God, a person I know! The very person who had told me so much about the Way. He sat with guitar in hand singing dirges in the dark to a group of unwed girls he had came to know. Then my eyes beheld the pulpit. Moonlight danced off spider webs that had been made in the baptistery pool. The priestess O’Hare was marrying two men – one who had left his wife and children, for the love of the other who had recently been acquitted from law stripped by the courts.

At that moment, while my hand reached for the light switch, I heard the voice of my dear friend Hope. Hope was calling my name. My thoughts returned to my Love. As I turned the light on the only face I saw in the mirror was my own. Could these images be the things I harbor in my heart for the House of the Lord? Is that what I have helped allow the House of God to become?

The House of God isn’t a fancy building sitting on choice real estate. The House of God is built in the hearts of men. Today the House of God is threatened by the hearts of men. Our Lord spoke of these things through the prophet Isaiah when he said, “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men” (Isaiah 29:13). Man has drifted from the teachings of God, and now takes up the positions of man.

Many God preaching Christians have taken up the position that abortion, the killing of the unborn child, is not murder. Against the plain teachings of the Lord, “You Shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13). Forgetting the teachings of the Lord in Genesis 9:6, “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed,” we have allowed the legalized murder of the image of God.

In the 1960’s it was decided that God was no longer welcomed in our schools. This was done in spite of the fact that Jesus said, “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea” (Matthew 18:6). The “little ones” are no longer taught abstinence; they are given condoms and pills and instructed in how to use them. Totally disregarding the teachings we have, “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry” (Colossians 3:5).

We have forsaken the morality taught us by the Word. Instead, we have allowed world leaders to define such things as “adultery,” “fornication,” and even when life becomes human. Homosexuality is no longer hidden in the dark corners of life; it is mainstream. Ordination of the sodomite has become a reality in spite of the teachings of the Lord. “If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination” (Leviticus 20:13). Putting a homosexual in charge to lead others to salvation knowing that, “Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God” (Romans 6:9-10).

The fire that the was once had for God, has been mixed with the coldness of the world, making us “lukewarm.” Are we ready to become like the church of the Laodiceans? Are we ready for God to “vomit [us] out of [His] mouth?” (Revelation 3:18).

These things that could easily qualify as abominations that lead to desolation do not have to be. We have the Way before us, the Word of God. Just because man’s laws say abortion, or any abomination for that matter is legal, doesn’t mean we, as Christians, have to approve of it and live by that law. We have the perfect law of Liberty. Second Timothy 3:16-17 tells us, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

We have to delight “in the law of the Lord, And in His law meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2). In so doing, ” He shall strengthen your heart” (Psalm 27:14). Unlike the laws of man, which change to fit each passing whim, the laws of God are unchanged through the centuries. The Psalmist wrote, “The counsel of the Lord stands forever, The plans of His heart to all generations” (Psalm 33:11). The same Word we came to accept is the same Word we are to live by. Our Savior does not change when the opinions of society seem to change. As the writer of Hebrews stated so plainly, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

We have within our grasp the power to “clean” the House of God. Our hearts have to follow the teachings we came to accept, “even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8), not the ones made by man. We have to follow the advice that was given to the church in Ephesus, “Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works” (Revelation 2:5). There are people who change the Words of God to fit their own lifestyles, “from such people turn away” (2 Timothy 2:5). We have to “turn away from evil and do good” (1 Peter 3:11) because “the face of the Lord is against those who do evil” (1 Peter 3:12).

The House of God will be cleaned when we turn our hearts away from the world and back to Jesus, “For with the heart one believes unto righteousness” (Romans 10:10). It’s up to us.

Until next time May The Good Lord Bless And Keep You: All Y’all!

I MAY NOT GO TO HEAVEN

sistineEveryone is familiar with the old saying, “only two things are certain in life: death and taxes.” And, I guess we all know the consequences of not paying taxes. But, what happens to us at death?  Is there a difference for a Christian as opposed to a non-Christian at death? There are probably as many theories as to what happens at death as there are people waiting to die.

Many people believe in a “soul sleep” when they die.  In other words there is no state of consciousness for the dead.  I don’t believe this to be a particularly Biblical idea.  Jesus gave us a story of a rich man and a poor man named Lazarus. Some will argue that this is a parable. But, it is not characteristic of the parables of Messiah. In either case it seems that be it a true story or a teaching parable the message that Jesus was proclaiming would be the same (I personally hold that it is a true story). They both died. Lazarus went to “Abraham’s bosom” and the rich man went to a place of torment.  In the story both men were aware and conscious not only of where they were, but f where the other was and also aware of the fate of their loved ones still alive on earth.  This one parable alone debunks any attempts making a case that there is a “soul sleep.” So where ever I am at death I will be conscious!

Where will I be? That is not as easy a question. On the death that Jesus was crucified He told the thief on the cross, “Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43).   The Apostle Paul wrote, “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8). So from Jesus’ own words and the writings of Paul it seems that where ever we are we will be in the presence of the Lord. Where exactly I do not know.  Is Abraham’s bosom synonymous with Paradise?  I would suggest yes. But, if that is the case then is Paradise and Abraham’s bosom synonymous with Heaven?

According to the Revelation there will be a judgment. And some will go on to their reward in Heaven while others will go on to the place of torment. Some eschatological camps hold that the Revelation has been fulfilled. If that is the case then Abraham’s bosom/Paradise would be synonymous with Heaven. Yet, if the Revelation has not been fulfilled it would suggest that Abraham’s bosom/Paradise would be more of a holding place in the Hadean realm where on waits for the judgment. Obviously form the story of the Rich man and Lazarus this Holding place in the Hadean realm would have people separated into groups: those who will go to Heaven and those who will not. And depending on your place the Hadean realm will not be a bad place. Just as interesting, according to the words of Jesus and Paul if we go to a holding place in the Hadean realm we will be in the presence of the Lord.

I can’t say where I will go when I die. But, what I do know is that as a Christian if I go to a holding place in the Hadean realm or if I go to straight to Heaven I will be conscious. And I will be in the presence of the Risen Savior! Maybe today you can help someone else so that when they leave this world they will be in the presence of the Lord.

HE’S ALIVE: BUT I THINK HE NEEDS FEEDING!

yogiTo most people he was not even noticed as he stood in the dark. His dark weathered skin not showing up even with the distant lights. But, the cracked red lips that have been in the weather for years stood out. Most passersby didn’t notice him at all, nor had they for the years he had been there. Some noticed and saw the scum of the earth. They saw a no count lazy homeless black man if they saw anything at all. But I saw something different. I saw the cracked lips of someone in need. I saw the savior sitting at the well needing a drink of water.

To a good many people we are may be the first and only Jesus they have ever seen. The Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth to follow his example (1 Corinthians 11:1). Paul had lived a life among them that they were to follow. A life that they were to imitate. He lived the kind of life that when they saw Paul they might be seeing a reflection of Jesus. After all Paul said, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). The example then was that we should be Christ like. How can we be Christ like, how can we be Christians and see our brothers in need and walk by not noticing them? A helping hand, a touch or even just a moment of conversation can open these people in need up to the Gospel of the Lord. To them we are representatives of the Risen Savior. To us they are the same Risen Savior!

Jesus was asked, “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink” (Matthew 25:37)? And, Jesus replied, “The King will reply, I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). We serve Christ by serving those around us in need. Maybe they are in our neighborhoods. Maybe they are in other towns Maybe they are in other countries. There are people all around us that need our help. And, when we serve them we serve the Risen Savior. Just as we represent Christ to them, they represent Christ to them. As we serve each other we serve Christ.

We are the first Christ that many people see. In turn, when we serve them they are the Risen Savior that we serve: they represent Christ to us. When we look at the needed and they look at us Jesus looks in a mirror. Today as we celebrate the resurrection of Christ we need to look around and see Christ all around us and be prepared to represent Him to others. Jesus is grown now; he can feed himself. Are you willing to be His spoon?

There are many ministries around that help the poor and the homeless. One such near me is PIN Ministries. Look in your area and maybe you can give Jesus a bite to eat.

BAILOUT

Posted by bobbycohoon on April 08, 2009

debt_bail_outThat has become the battle cry of America: Bailout.  I have personally never seen times this bad. There are no job, no money, no nothing. I mean it is so bad that Paula Deen is using government cheese in her recipes. The Big Three Auto makers are crying for a bailout. AIG is on the skids. Homes are being foreclosed on at alarming rates daily. And, if the banks have any money they aren’t lending! Everyone is turning to the government for help. But there is one bailout plan that a lot of people seem to be missing. God offers us the security that no government could ever offer.

The problem isn’t anything new. Paul wrote, “The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows” (1 Timothy 6:10).  And greed is just what has got us into this mess.  We have tried to amass more and more of everything that we don’t really need (and can’t pay for). Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us each day our daily bread” (Luke 11:3).  But, our daily bread isn’t what we went after.

Following Jesus offers us the only real bailout plan. Here we don’t have to worry about foreclosures. Jesus helpcoyotesaid, “In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2).  The room is already prepared for us. Paul wrote in his second surviving letter to the church in Corinth, “Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands” (2 Corinthians 5:1). There are no foreclosure signs in Heaven!

Today everyone is claiming that they have lost their retirement plans, their 401 k’s.  Luckily with God’s bailout plan that is not a worry that we have. The Psalmist wrote, “I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever” (Psalm 23:6).  While critics wonder if the Obama plan will work and if it does how many years will we be paying it back, God’s plan will last forever! “To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life” (Romans 2:7). Compared to “eternity” our current economic crisis is only temporary. The government’s plan might be a temporary fix to a long term problem, but God offers us a long term fix to this short term problem.

In this crisis there are many people struggling and turning to all the wrong places. As Christians we have a handle on the problem because we know the man who holds the long term solution. People are cutting back on everything, and some of the cutting back is probably a good thing. But, while they are cutting back they don’t know where to turn to get real peace.  Maybe today is the day you should offer to tell someone about God’s bailout plan.

BEGINNING OR ENDING?

treesIt’s hard to look at the picture and tell if it is the beginning of spring or the ending of fall. I mean the trees are bare and there are leaves all over the ground. The only trees that are green are the pines and they stay green regardless of the season. So to be sure which season it is you would just have to be there when the picture was taken.  Many of us are like that picture in our Christian walks; it is hard to tell what part of their Christian journey they are in, or even if they are in a Christian journey!

As you have led your life today have the people that you have encountered had any idea that you are a Christian? In his letter the Ephesians, Paul wrote, “Be imitators of God…” (Ephesians 5:1). Yet, some many times the people we encounter have no clue that we are Christians. In our lives we profess to be Christians but somehow we fail to let others see it. Paul said that we are “to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;…… and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:22b,24).

Jesus set examples for us as to how we should live; He even said so, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:15). And, the example of Jesus is the example that Paul wants us to follow in our lives. Paul wrote, “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). And, if we are struggling now to know what that example is, Paul gave us one of his famous lists (Ephesians 4:25-32:

1.      putting away lying

2.      Be angry, and do not sin

3.      Let him who stole steal no longer

4.      Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth

5.      And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

6.      Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.

7.      And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

We don’t have to be like those trees in the picture with people wondering if we are Christian or not. If we live our lives following the example given to us by Christ there will never be any doubt that we belong to God.  When people see you do they see a tree with barren branches and have to wonder if you are a Christian, or do they see a tree forever green and ripe with the fruit of the Spirit?

Six Stringing To Glory

Posted by bobbycohoon on April 02, 2009

guitarjosh1The guitar is probably the most versatile instrument ever invented.  Think about it is involved in almost every type of music known. It can play soft and sweet and with the next strum play hard and heavy. It can and does invoke a full range of emotions with just six strings. Have you ever noticed how similar the guitar strings are to the life Christ led and the one we are to lead?

The amazing thing about a guitar is that the number one string is on the bottom and yet it has the highest pitch. Our Savior is the high Priest. But, like the strings on the guitar he didn’t claim the highest spot by being on top. Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, “but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.  And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-  even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:7-8). Today we equate being number one with how high we climb UP the ladder.  Yet, Jesus rose to the top by climbing DOWN the ladder.

We try and climb to the top by looking up at those who have risen to the top before us. But, Jesus would have us rise by looking down toward those who have not been able to rise. Jesus said, “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me’ (Matthew 25:40). We don’t rise by looking up. Those at the top rarely need our help. We rise by going down to the ones who need help. Now, it should be noted that the man we see as successful in every way but yet is without Christ is one of the least spiritually, though his success has him at the top. We rise when we descend to share the Gospel with the man who is seen as being in his height but is yet in spiritual depths.

Thumb always pushes down on the number six (top) string of the guitar as if pushing it down to greatest. The fingers always up pick the first (bottom) string on the guitar exalting it to a high position. When they are all played together the bottom string sings above all the others just as the risen Savior’s, who made himself nothing, words cut above all others through the course of time.

Which string are you?
